Growing your own vegetables is not only a great way to save money, it also offers a rewarding connection with nature, and there’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh produce from your own backyard. One such delight is the snap pea, a crisp, sweet vegetable perfect for both raw and cooked dishes.
Last year was such a great pea season for us. Alas, I did not get to sample any, as my son would pick and eat all of them every day before we could head back inside the house!

They’re high in fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K, making them a nutritious addition to any diet.
Benefits of a Raised Garden Bed
A raised garden bed, as the name suggests, is a gardening method where the soil and plants are elevated above ground level. This approach offers several benefits including improved soil drainage, better control over soil quality, easier pest management, and reduced strain on your back due to less bending. Raised beds are particularly beneficial for growing snap peas as they prefer well-drained soil and cooler temperatures, both of which can be more easily managed in a raised garden.
Getting Started: The Setup
First, choose a location in your raised bed that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. Snap peas thrive in full sun, but can tolerate a bit of shade. Your raised bed should be at least 12 inches deep to accommodate the root system of the snap peas.
Next, fill your raised bed with a mixture of quality topsoil and compost. Snap peas fix their own nitrogen, so they don’t require heavily fertilized soil. The compost will provide other essential nutrients and improve the soil structure, promoting good drainage.
Planting Your Snap Peas

I live in zone 5, and planted my peas about three weeks prior to our spring frost date.
To plant your peas, soak the seeds in water for a few hours before planting to speed up germination. Sow them about 1 inch deep and 2-4 inches apart. If your raised bed is wide enough, consider planting in double rows for a higher yield.
Snap peas are climbers, so providing a trellis or similar support is essential. Install this at the time of planting to avoid disturbing the roots later.
Maintaining Your Snap Pea Plants
Water the peas regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can cause root rot, while underwatering may stunt growth.
Watch out for common pests such as aphids and caterpillars. If you see these, consider using organic insecticidal soap. Regularly check for disease signs such as yellowing leaves or a powdery mildew, which can be managed with fungicides if caught early.
Harvesting and Enjoying Your Snap Peas
Snap peas are usually ready for harvest about 60 days after planting. Harvest when the pods are plump and you can see the shape of the peas inside, but before the pods become overly bulgy and tough. Regular harvesting encourages the plants to produce more pods. Trust me, my son was a pro with this!
To harvest, hold the vine with one hand and pick the pod with the other to avoid damaging the plant. Snap peas are best eaten fresh, but can be refrigerated for about a week or blanched and frozen for longer storage.
