My son was recently diagnosed with low muscle tone, or hypotonia. This after years of noticing how easily he tired, and how fidgety he could become. He had previously been diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder, or SPD. His occupational therapist was quick to point out that muscle tone in this case is measured at rest; not necessarily the strength of the muscle.
Hypotonia, commonly referred to as “floppy baby syndrome,” is a condition where children exhibit low muscle tone and even possible reduced muscle strength. This can lead to a range of issues, from developmental delays to more severe motor and cognitive impairments. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for children with hypotonia, as well as strategies parents can use to support their child’s development.
What Causes Hypotonia?
Hypotonia can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetic, metabolic, or neurological disorders. Some common causes include:
Genetic conditions: Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and muscular dystrophy are among the genetic disorders that can lead to hypotonia.
Metabolic conditions: Certain metabolic issues, such as hypothyroidism or glycogen storage diseases, can result in low muscle tone.
Neurological issues: Brain damage or malformations, cerebral palsy, and spinal muscular atrophy are examples of neurological causes of hypotonia.
Unknown: There are many instances where the cause is unknown.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Hypotonia can present itself in different ways, depending on the child’s age and the severity of the condition. Some common symptoms include:
Difficulty holding the head up
Delays in reaching motor milestones, such as rolling over, sitting, crawling, or walking
Poor reflexes and muscle strength
Difficulty swallowing or feeding
A “ragdoll” appearance when being held, with little resistance to movement
Becoming tired easily

There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for hypotonia, as it depends on the underlying cause. For my son, we are pursuing treatment via occupational therapy. In some cases, addressing the root issue may improve muscle tone. However, for many children, ongoing management is necessary. Some common treatment options include:
Physical therapy: This helps to improve muscle strength, balance, and coordination. Regular sessions with a pediatric physical therapist can support a child’s progress toward developmental milestones.
Occupational therapy: Occupational therapists can help with fine motor skills, such as grasping objects and self-care tasks, as well as sensory processing and adaptation.
Speech therapy: For children with difficulties in feeding or swallowing, speech therapists can provide support to develop oral motor skills.
Assistive devices: Some children may benefit from the use of braces, splints, or specialized equipment to improve mobility and independence.

As a parent, you play a crucial role in helping your child reach their full potential. Here are some strategies to support your child’s development:
Stay proactive: Early intervention is key. Consult with your pediatrician or a specialist if you have concerns about your child’s muscle tone or development.
